Boating is a favorite pastime on the island of Martinique. Large sailing yachts,
catamarans and small motorized launches are available for rent. There are also
plenty of half- and full-day sailing trips to choose from. For deep-sea fishers, there
are plenty of tuna, barracuda, dolphin, kingfish and bonito for the catching.
Of course, other water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving are popular on
Martinique as well. There are old shipwrecks and lovely coral gardens to explore
beneath the water's surface. Scuba divers should be aware, however, that they will
need to present a medical certificate and insurance papers in order to dive.
A familiar sight is a group of travelers, backpacks in place, tramping across a
mountain or through the rain forest. Hiking is the most popular participant sport on
the island. Well-marked trails crisscross the island, leading hikers through scenic
landscapes and along the rugged shore. Other land sports include golf, tennis and
horseback riding. Golfers will revel in the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones course at Golf
de L'Impératrice Joséphine. Located at Trois-Ilets, the club also offers an
English-speaking pro, a pro shop, a bar and restaurant.
Off-the-beaten-track excursions led by professional guides are popular on
Martinique; they range from mountain biking through the Parc Naturel Regional de
la Martinique and off-road driving, to boating and horseback riding.
