  • Caribbean Carnival
The many unique features of the carnival in the Caribbean include: mass participation - more than ten percent of the population appear in masquerade bands, tourists are encouraged to participate in the festivals. Own indigenous music (Calypso, Soca and Reggea) and its own musical instruments (the Steel Band) - the only musical instrument created in the 20th Century.

The ingenious traditional and contemporary masquerade, the stage spectacles, the outpouring of new music, songs, dances and vigorous rhetoric create street theatre achieving complex levels of excellence.

Aruba was discovered in 1499 by the Spaniard Alonso de Ojeda. Throughout the swashbuckling colonial era that followed, the island had its share of visits by pirates and buccaneers. In 1636 near the culmination of 80 Year war between Spain and Holland, the Dutch took possession. There was an interregnum from 1805 to 1816 during the Napoleonic Wars and the English assumed control. In 1816 the Dutch returned.
